The Dominican Republic is the most visited destination in the Caribbean. The year-round golf courses are major attractions. A geographically diverse nation, the Dominican Republic is home to both the Caribbean's tallest mountain peak, Pico Duarte, and the Caribbean's largest lake and lowest point, Lake Enriquillo. The island has a tropical rainforest climate in the coastal and lowland areas. The annual average temperature is 25 °C (77 °F). At higher elevations the temperature averages 18 °C (64.4 °F) while near sea level the average temperature is 28 °C (82.4 °F). January and February are the coolest months of the year while August is the hottest month. The official language is Spanish, but a large number of Dominicans also speak English very well since many private schools teach English as a second language. In tourist areas, most Dominicans at least speak two languages.
